Is marijuana about to become legal in Thailand? We bring you the real deal.

Marijuana plant.

Recently in many news publications the media has been buzzing and on a “high” about the possibility of medical marijuana to become legal in Thailand. This would not be the first time this has been discussed and there have been articles about this in the past. The social media world was set on fire, literally, earlier this week when multiple news websites posted that medical marijuana was about to become legal. Even marijuana.com and major marijuana news information sources posted this.

We here at The Pattaya news dug deep into this rumor and these articles and have held off until now on commenting on this now that we have a proper answer.

At this time, much to the disappointment of many people, marijuana is not going to become legal in Thailand in any way, shape or form. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha has publically stated that more study is needed and the statement that there would be a legal cannabis plantation for medical marijuana is incorrect. He stated that the announcement by Thailand Farmer’s Association chairman Prapat Panyachartraksa to the media that authorities agreed to build a 5000 rai facility in Sakorn Nakhon province for marijuana for medical purposes was not correct.

Quoted from the Prime Minister General:

“I have never known about that. I asked Piyasakon [Sakolsattayatorn, Public Health Minister] and he said there are no regulations issued to allow it.”

Although marijuana can be grown and sold legally in some countries for medical purposes, Thailand needs tough measures to prevent the spread out of any kind of drug, he further added.

“For the time being, permission for planting cannabis is unacceptable for Thais.” Prime Minister General Prayut stated, making it very clear that at this time there will be no legal marijuana in Thailand.

We here at The Pattaya News will continue to deliver real, in the moment news and further updates when we have them.
