Bangkok authorities introduce potential pollution measures to prevent PM 2.5 smog this December

Bangkok –

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has introduced pollution measures and installed air quality monitoring stations in all Bangkok districts, following a rise of PM 2.5 dust particles.

Bangkok Governor Aswin Kwanmuang had called for a meeting with the BMA and related authorities on October 16 to discuss the potential measures to reduce the increasing air pollution.

He told the Associated Press yesterday: “The rise of PM 2.5 dust particles is likely to occur annually during the end of the year from December onwards. Therefore, we have asked relevant authorities to come up with some measures and regulations to handle the pollution beforehand.”

According to his statement, a number of air quality monitoring stations are now operating in 50 Bangkok districts and an additional 20 monitoring stations will be installed at community parks around the city by next month.

The BMA is currently in talks with the city’s traffic police division for possible measures to refrain semi-trailer trucks and larger vehicles from driving between 6:00 AM. to 9 PM. from December 1, 2020, until February 2021 as it is believed to possibly reduce air pollution in the city by 39 percent.

The Office of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation is also advised to tighten its measures to prevent all open burning poses which tremendously produces toxic smokes and troublesome ash.

Additionally, educational institutions will be asked to avoid holding all kinds of outdoor activities from a certain period. Some institutions may be closed if the air quality index reaches an unhealthy level for more than three consecutive days, according to the Governor.

“We are kindly asking both public and private sectors to be cooperative with pollution measures, hoping that the air pollution will be affecting people as little as possible,” Aswin concluded.
