Thaksin Shinawatra Likely Allowed to Travel to Chiang Mai to Meet Relatives

National—

On March 6th, 2024, Pol. Lt. Gen. Montree Bunyayothin, the Deputy Director-General of the Thai Department of Probation, publicly mentioned the case of Thaksin Shinawatra who was released on parole recently and that he could travel to Chiang Mai to meet relatives and pay respects to the ancestors of his family after requesting permission to probation officers.

According to Pol. Lt. Gen. Montree, Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Thaksin’s patron, and daughter, could apply for permission from probation officers in the area by specifying the time and purpose of leaving. It was a normal process for probation officers to grant permission after scrutiny, said Pol. Lt. Gen. Montree.

To approve the request, Pol. Lt. Gen. Montree said that it was mandatory to scrutinize whether the purpose of leaving was necessary or whether it could be therapeutic for Thaksin to become a better person.

By leaving his stated residence, probation officers had the authority and discretion to approve his leave if it was for a short while and to rehabilitate him mentally and physically, said Pol. Lt. Gen. Montree.

In the case of relocating Thaksin’s residence, “Chan Song La” Manor, to another location, probation officers needed to inspect the new residence during his probation on parole according to conditions and terms of the parole committee, said Pol. Lt. Gen. Montree.

However, the details on the exact date of his leaving could not be disclosed to the public as it would violate his privacy and rights, remarked Pol. Lt. Gen. Montree.
