Ratchaburi provincial politician detained by police for allegedly killing municipal president candidate and injuring four guests at funeral

Ratchaburi –

Wanchat Niemsaksa, 60, turned himself in to the Ratchaburi police this morning, March 2nd, after allegedly killing a municipal president candidate and injuring four others, including two local government officers, at a funeral in Ratchaburi province last night.

The horrifying incident occurred shortly before the funeral liturgy at Tha Makam temple in the Mueang district. About 2 gunshots were heard by funeral guests before the assailant, who was allegedly discreetly hiding at the back of a Buddha image, reportedly began shooting multiple times at guests for more than 10 minutes. At least 20 rounds of bullets were found scattered at the scene.

Waraporn Niamraksa, the Municipal president candidate of the Donsai Sub-district, was shot and pronounced dead shortly after being sent to a local hospital while two municipal officers, Yingphan Kanket, the Don Sai Sub-district headsman, and Nakorn Wanphen, member candidate of the Municipal Council, and other two guests at the funeral were seriously injured.

The shooter had reportedly managed to escape the scene during the chaos. However, the police were able to identify the suspect and issued an arrest warrant overnight.

Wanchat, who was also a member of Ratchaburi Provincial Administration Organization Region 3, was taken to the Ratchaburi provincial police division this morning by the Chief Executive of the Provincial Administrative Organizations (PAO).

Initially, the alleged shooter denied all accusations stated in the arrest warrant and sought bail release. He was detained and being interrogated at the provincial police station.

According to the victim’s family members, it is assumed that the cause of the incident was politics as Waraporn was a promising candidate for Municipal president of the Donsai Subdistrict. However, according to their statement, she had never been in conflict with anyone and had participated in the local election fairly and honestly.
