ASEAN Withdraws 2034 FIFA World Cup Bid, Throws Support Behind Saudi Arabia

National—

The ASEAN region withdrew from being a candidate host of the FIFA World Cup 2034. Mr. Srettha Thavisin, Thai Prime Minister, gave full support to Saudi Arabia hosting the World Cup.

Previously, Thailand and other Asia countries bid to host the World Cup and Thailand conducted research on the conditions at the ASEAN Summit, Muang Thong Thani, Bangkok, Thailand.

However, Saudi Arabia publicly stated its intention to host the World Cup, and as a result, the opportunities for ASEAN nations had clearly diminished.

The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) also voted for Saudi Arabia and petitioned ASEAN nations to be united in supporting Saudi Arabia to be the host of the FIFA World Cup 2034.

“Mohammed bin Salman, the leader of Saudi Arabia, had asked Thailand for support on the World Cup and an upcoming Expo event in 2030 and treated Thailand with good friendship. He is happy to support Saudi Arabia,” said Srettha.

Only Egypt and Greece had bid as co-hosts against Saudi Arabia.
