Bangkok Metropolitan Administration announces take-away only at restaurants from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM

Bangkok, Thailand-

UPDATE: At 4:45 PM today the Thai Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-O-Cha, announced he had overridden the decision of the BMA and the takeaway time will now be 9:00 PM to 6:00 AM to help restaurant owners with their valuable dinner time business.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has just announced at a press conference that only take-away will be allowed at restaurants in Bangkok from 7:00 PM to 6:00 AM effective tomorrow, January 5th, 2020. The order is “Until Further Notice.”

Police Lieutenant Colonel Pongsakorn Khwanmuang made the announcement and stated the decision came after joint discussions with officials and the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) in Bangkok.

He also stated that the order applies to street food vendors with seating and that people must still only take food for takeaway during these hours.  A ban on selling alcohol for sit-down service continues during the other hours of legal dine-in.

Pongsakorn stated that the thought process behind the ban on dining during these hours, even outside dining, was to encourage people to go home and eat and gather less, especially in the evening and overnight hours when people are more likely to gather outside of work.

This is only effective for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration area and not other high-risk provinces, such as Chonburi and Pattaya, at this time. It is also important to note this is NOT a curfew or movement restriction, people are still free to move around at these hours and purchase food for takeaway.
