No new locally spread cases of Covid-19 in Thailand, mass testing begins in response to foreign cases testing positive

Bangkok-

The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or the CCSA, announced no new locally spread cases in Thailand for the 50th day in a row this morning while giving a full briefing of two cases involving foreign nationals testing positive for Covid-19 over the weekend.

Dr. Taweesin Visanuyothin, the spokesperson of the CCSA, gave a special press conference this morning to address the issues regarding the two foreign cases. You can learn more about these cases here involving an Egyptian soldier and here involving a nine year old girl from Sudan.

He provided a complete timeline of both cases and revealed that mass testing will be taking place at both the condominium where the nine year old girl and her family, diplomats, were self isolating as well as a shopping center in Rayong, the Laem Thong department store, where the Egyptian soldier and other members of his air crew visited.

Two staff at the Dvaree Diva hotel, where the Egyptian soldier stayed, have also been quarantined and will be tested. A total of 394 people are potentially at risk and were in the shopping mall during the time of the visit by the Egyptian soldiers, according to Digital Economy and Society Ministry inspector-general Dr. Polawat Witoolkollachi. The Rayong Public Health office is contacting and testing those who may have been exposed for free. If you were in the mall on July 10th between 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM you should immediately call the Department of Disease Control via Hotline 1422 or the Rayong Public Health Office to get tested.

Meanwhile, a condo where the Sudanese diplomat’s family of the infected girl chose to stay, is located in Khlong Tan district. Residents of this condominium who had possibly had contact with the girl will also be tested for Covid-19. This is despite the condo and diplomats family stating that they did not break the quarantine and did not leave their self isolation. DDC deputy director-general Dr. Preecha Prempree decided to examine the condominium for himself and instructed any person who came into contact with the family to immediately take a Covid-19 test. The family were allowed to self isolate as a diplomatic “exemption” to quarantine rules.

Dr. Taweesin stated that the rules regarding air crews and diplomatic exemptions would be re-evaluated and several future visits of Egyptian air crews and military scheduled for this month had already been canceled.

Seven imported cases of repatriated Thai nationals in state quarantine were announced today. Six were from Egypt and one was from the USA. None were exposed to the general public, according to Dr. Taweesin. Today marks fifty days in a row with no new locally spread cases of Covid-19 in Thailand. The exact fault of the incident over how the soldiers broke quarantine is still being investigated, with multiple agencies and departments claiming they were not responsible or pointing fingers at other agencies. The Thai Army, hotel, airport and multiple divisions of the government have all denied responsibility or claimed they followed all procedures and processes properly.
