The owner of Jomtien Sauna has been forced to temporarily change their business to a restaurant after a new series of Covid-19 infections caused multiple restrictions in the Chonburi area, essentially ordering them to close their popular pool and sauna despite following every Covid-19 precaution according to staff.
The Jomtien Sauna is located at Soi Wat Boonkanjanaram in Banglamung. They are currently open as a restaurant between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM daily until the government relaxes restrictions and allows them to re-open as a full sauna and pool.
Mrs. Sudarat Sinyorini, 46, the owner, told The Pattaya News in an interview yesterday afternoon “The sauna has been opened for eight years and we have always been busy and a popular place, but the Covid-19 situation and more specifically government regulations around the business have for the first time in our history placed us in a very difficult position through no fault of our own.”
“In the first wave of Covid –19, we had temporarily been forced to close for three months by government order. This severely stretched our finances but we managed to get through this difficult situation, hoping things would improve. However, here we are nearly seven months later and are closed once again by the government due to no fault of our own. I have followed the news closely and there have been no cases or clusters of Covid-19 traced to saunas and swimming pools but they keep closing these items despite us following every potential measure to protect our staff and customers.” Sudarat continued.
“After the first round of Covid-19 closures we re-opened again but we don’t have many foreign customers now due to borders being essentially closed since March of last year to foreign tourists. The majority of our customers are now local Thai residents and business has been difficult, but we were managing to survive.”
“We have now had to temporarily close the sauna and open the restaurant instead to fight during this hard time. However, many of our regular customers are not aware of the quality of our food or won’t come due to thinking we have to close every service so we want to ensure the message gets out that you can still come and enjoy our delicious food and burgers during this time.” Sudarat added.
“We are concerned that there is no end game or overall plan behind this latest measure of closings and have not seen any sort of real commitment by government leaders to help business owners and their employees who have been forced to close their business through no fault of their own. We are ready, willing, and able to comply with any Covid-19 protection measure, including mask-wearing, social distancing, temperature checks, mandatory hand sanitizer, discouraging large groups, proper disinfecting and cleaning of equipment and surfaces, etc. in order to reopen.” Sudarat concluded.
