Khao Kheow Open Zoo Plans Grand 61st Birthday Celebration for Beloved Hippo Mae Mali, Thailand’s Oldest Hippo

CHONBURI: Khao Kheow Open Zoo is preparing a special celebration for Mae Mali, the public’s beloved hippopotamus, as she turns 61 on September 8th, 2026.

Zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi said the event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at the hippopotamus exhibit in Chonburi. Visitors will find activities meant to show affection for Mae Mali, including an exhibition on hippo facts and her life story, fun games with souvenirs, and a chance for tourists to write birthday cards with personal wishes.

The highlight will be a special fruit cake presented to Mae Mali, accompanied by a group singing of “Happy Birthday.” Staff, visitors, and fans are expected to join in a warm atmosphere of affection for the longtime zoo resident.

The zoo invited tourists and fans to take part in the special day, send well wishes, and show their love for Mae Mali, who has lived at the zoo and remained a public favorite for many years. Some sources say she may be the oldest living hippo in a zoo in the world.
