BANGKOK, 7 August 2026 – Schools should be places of safety, learning and growth. That makes yesterday’s shooting incident at Debsirin School in Nonthaburi province, where several people have lost their lives and many others have been injured, even more heartbreaking. Our deepest sympathies go to all the victims, including teachers and children, as well as their families and everyone affected by this tragedy.

UNICEF condemns all forms of violence – especially in and around schools. Schools and all learning spaces should be unconditionally safe havens for children to learn, interact, and grow. Parents should never have to worry about dropping their children off at school, children should never feel at risk in classrooms, and teachers should feel safe to do their jobs.
The priority right now must be that all the children, teachers, parents and school personnel who experienced or witnessed this violence receive the best possible physical and mental health care. That will include emergency treatment and long-term care. UNICEF stands by to support all authorities, schools and families in any way we can.
Reports confirm that the perpetrator is a child. This raises particularly difficult questions for us as a society. As more facts emerge, it’s important that we assess what happened today and what can be done to prevent such incidents happening again, such as improving mental health services for children and working to make all schools free of all forms of violence, including emotional and physical violence.
We also appeal to the public, social media users, and the media to refrain from posting, sharing, or forwarding graphic images and videos related to this incident, particularly with children involved. Sharing such content risks further traumatizing the victims, their loved ones, and the broader school community. We must prioritize the protection, privacy, and well-being of all during this difficult time.
