CHONBURI, Thailand– A baby Irrawaddy dolphin that became separated from its pod and washed ashore at Bang Saen Beach was successfully rescued by marine rescuers, but has since died, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Friday, May 15th, 2026. Tourists swimming at Bang Saen Beach alerted the White Shark Marine Life Rescue Team of Saensuk Municipality after spotting the young dolphin struggling in shallow water near the shore. Strong waves and windy conditions are believed to have caused the calf to become lost from its group.
Mr. Natdanai Mongkunkong, also known as “Deaw,” head of the White Shark Marine Rescue Club and Saensuk Municipality official, led the team that responded to the call. The rescuers managed to safely capture the dolphin, which measured about 1.20 meters in length. It was immediately transported to the Institute of Marine Science at Burapha University for observation, treatment, and rehabilitation, with the intention of releasing it back into the wild once recovered.
“This is the first time we have encountered an Irrawaddy dolphin calf straying into Bang Saen Beach,” the rescue team stated. “We were initially able to help it safely.”
Mr. Natdanai added that the White Shark Marine Rescue Team regularly patrols Bang Saen Beach to ensure the safety of tourists and swimmers, especially during periods of rough seas and strong currents, when extra caution is required.
Despite the rescue efforts and veterinary care, the latest update confirms that the young dolphin has sadly died :(. RIP.
