A delegation from the Senate Committee for Driving the Senator-People Engagement Project, Eastern Region, visited Koh Larn on Wednesday morning to assess the island’s long-standing garbage problem.
Led by Mrs. Pratum Wongsawasdi, head of the committee, the group included Mr. Kitisak Muensri (First Vice Chairman), Mr. Thanakorn Thawonchinchoti, Mr. Chotichai Buadit, Designate Major Kropot Runghiranwat, and Police Major General Angkun Khlai Khlueng.
The team departed from Laem Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya and traveled to Koh Larn, a popular tourist island just off the coast. They inspected the main landfill site, where approximately 150,000 tons of accumulated waste have built up.
Local residents and officials have raised concerns about the serious environmental impact, public health risks, and damage to the island’s image as a key tourist destination for Pattaya.
In the afternoon, the delegation continued to Rayong Province, where they visited an air quality monitoring station in the Nong Faep community at Wat Nong Faep, Mab Ta Phut sub-district, to monitor ongoing air pollution issues in the industrial area.
The field visit is part of the Senate’s broader initiative to engage directly with people in Thailand’s eastern provinces. The committee wants to gather firsthand information, public suggestions, and recommendations to develop policy proposals and coordinate with relevant agencies for concrete, sustainable solutions, particularly on environmental challenges that affect residents’ quality of life and the long-term development of tourism in the region.
