Pattaya Mayor Mr. Poramese Ngampichet presided over the official opening of the Koh Larn Community Waste Incineration and Integrated Management Center in Pattaya City, Chonburi Province, at 10:00 AM yesterday, April 10th. The event was attended by Deputy Mayors Mr. Manoch Nongyai and Mr. Damrongkiat Pinijkan, the Pattaya City Council Speaker and members from District 3, the Deputy City Clerk, and Koh Larn community committee representatives. Mr. Wasu Klomkliang, Chairman of Smart Waste Management Co., Ltd., delivered the project report at the center.
In his address, Mayor Poramese Ngampichet stated that the garbage problem on Koh Larn has long been a top priority for Pattaya City. Data shows more than 150,000 tons of accumulated waste on the island, with an additional 25 tons generated daily. This has severely impacted the environment, public health, and the island’s tourism image.
To address the issue, Pattaya City aligned the project with the national master plan for solid waste management and the “Clean Province” action plan. Officials studied and designed a tailored “Stand Alone” solution suited to Koh Larn’s unique conditions, resulting in the construction of this fully integrated community waste management center.
The core of the facility is sustainable waste disposal using modern incineration technology capable of handling up to 50 tons of waste per day, while strictly maintaining environmental standards. The system includes incineration, supporting buildings, and ash landfill components, all implemented in accordance with academic principles and relevant laws to minimize any impact on local communities.
The project also promotes public-private partnership through a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. Smart Waste Management Co., Ltd. will operate the center for 25 years to ensure maximum efficiency in waste management.
This initiative represents a concrete achievement under the third goal of the BETTER PATTAYA policy. It advances the vision of “Neo Pattaya for Sustainable Tourism” and the “Neo Koh Larn” policy, which focuses on long-term green tourism. The new center will not only eliminate the backlog of accumulated waste but also set a new standard for environmental care on Koh Larn, restoring the island’s natural beauty and delivering sustainable improvements in quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
