Chonburi, Thailand– Takhian Tia Subdistrict Mayor Mitchai Phakobtham, together with Ms. Malinee Singhasuwich, a member of the Chonburi Provincial Council and Secretary of the Chonburi Provincial Administrative Organization Council, led a site visit to tackle the ongoing issue of inadequate water resources for farming activities in the area.
The inspection took place in Village No. 2, in the Takhian Tia Subdistrict. The delegation included municipal executives, Takhian Tia Municipal Council members, engineering department officials, the mayor’s working team, and other relevant stakeholders. The primary goal was to listen directly to residents’ concerns and explore practical solutions for the shortage of water needed for rice farming, upland crops, and other agricultural produce.
During the on-site assessment, authorities observed that the affected area consists of extensive farmland owned and cultivated by local residents for many years. However, challenges persist due to limited access roads in some sections, the predominantly private ownership of the land, and the overgrowth of dense vegetation surrounding the original waterways over several kilometers. These factors have made water retention and management increasingly difficult.
The area features an abandoned ancient canal that has long been neglected, with portions classified as private property and others as public land. Any future initiatives, such as dredging canals or constructing weirs for better water drainage and storage, will require thorough verification of details, full consent from all involved parties, and clear designation of responsible agencies or entities for long-term maintenance and oversight.
The joint working team conducted a preliminary survey of the site’s conditions and concluded that engineering officials must carry out a detailed inspection. This will help determine the most appropriate approaches to establishing effective water storage facilities or management systems. The ultimate goal is to ensure farmers have a sufficient and sustainable water supply for their agricultural needs moving forward.
