A Royal Thai Air Force AT-6TH Wolverine light attack aircraft crashed late Thursday morning in a remote forested area of Chom Thong District, Chiang Mai Province, killing both crew members on board.
Authorities reported the crash occurred between 10:30 and 10:50 a.m. on Thursday (January 29th) in the Mae Soi Subdistrict, near Ban Huai Muang. Some accounts suggest the site may be closer to Ban Huai Fang. The aircraft went down in dense forest far from local communities, complicating rescue and recovery efforts.
Photographs from the scene show wreckage scattered across the crash site, with evidence of a severe fire. A section of the wing bore the distinctive red, white, and blue roundel of the Royal Thai Air Force.
Local officials confirmed two fatalities, believed to be the aircraft’s pilots. Their identities are being verified, with official confirmation expected from the Royal Thai Air Force. Rescue teams and security personnel have secured the area to allow investigators to proceed.
Personnel from Wing 41 in Chiang Mai, along with local security forces and rescue units, quickly moved to the site. The area has been cordoned off while specialists prepare to investigate the cause of the accident.
The AT-6TH Wolverine is the newest light attack aircraft in service with the Royal Thai Air Force. Designed for close air support, training, and counter-insurgency missions, the aircraft represents a key modernization effort for Thailand’s air capabilities.
