Khao Kheow Open Zoo Invites Visitors to Join the Weekly Excitement: Will Hippo Kha Moo Play Ball or Enjoy a Bath?

Chonburi, Thailand– Every Wednesday at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi Province becomes a day of anticipation and delight as the park hosts a special animal enrichment activity for its beloved common hippopotamus, the charismatic 8-year-old female known affectionately as *Kha Moo” (meaning “Pork Leg”). This popular resident and zoo superstar captivates crowds with her unpredictable antics during the “Bath and Ball Play” session.

The weekly event coincides with the zoo’s major weekly cleaning of the hippo’s pool and display area. Zookeepers hose down the enclosure while providing enrichment through ball play and a refreshing water spray for the animal. Visitors eagerly watch to see whether Kha Moo will enthusiastically engage with the large ball, splashing and interacting playfully, or simply relax and enjoy the bath, showcasing her adorable and natural behaviors.

Narongwit Chotchoi, Director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, explained that the activity is part of the zoo’s ongoing efforts to enhance animal welfare standards. “This enrichment promotes both physical and mental health for the animals, ensuring they stay clean, active, and enriched in a stimulating environment,” he said. “It also allows the public to observe and learn about the natural behaviors of hippopotamuses up close, building greater appreciation for wildlife.”

The highlight begins between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., when keepers initiate the enrichment session. Tourists gather to cheer and speculate on Kha Moo’s mood for the day, will she playfully bat the ball around or bask in the cooling water jets? Following the cleaning and playtime, a feeding session takes place from 11:00 a.m. onward, where Kha Moo enjoys her meal alongside her mother, “Sri Pink”, offering another charming opportunity for visitors to watch the pair interact.

Beyond the fun and smiles, the program serves an educational purpose. It helps build public awareness about wildlife care and conservation, inspiring children, youth, and adults alike to value and protect natural resources.

Khao Kheow Open Zoo warmly invites locals and tourists to join the weekly excitement, cheer on Kha Moo, and witness her endearing moments during the “Bath and Ball” activity every Wednesday. The zoo continues to stress responsible animal management while providing memorable experiences for all who visit.
