Thailand’s annual New Year holiday has once again been marred by tragic road accidents. The total of the “Seven dangerous days” of travel (December 30, 2025 – January 5th, 2026), authorities recorded 1,511 accidents nationwide, leaving 1,464 people injured and 272 dead.
Phuket reported the highest number of accidents (55) and injuries (58). Bangkok recorded the highest death toll, with 22 fatalities.
Authorities pointed to speeding (38%) and drunk driving (21%) as the leading risk behaviors. Motorcycles were the vehicles most frequently involved in crashes (73%). Most accidents occur from 3:01 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. (18%) on highway roads (43%).
TPN Media notes, however, that year over year according to Thailand’s Transport Ministry, the New Year’s “Seven dangerous days” saw crashes fall 14% and deaths 31%, while public transport reportedly handled demand smoothly with no stranded passengers.
