Pattaya, Thailand – Police in Pattaya successfully rescued an 18-year-old Thai youth on the night of January 3rd, 2026, after he was allegedly assaulted and detained by a group involving two Chinese nationals and a Thai woman in connection with fraudulent “mule” bank accounts.
Officers from Pattaya City Police Station, along with Pattaya Tourist Police, responded to an emergency call at approximately 10:46 p.m. at a condominium on Pattaya Third Road. The victim, identified only as “Mr. Bas” (a pseudonym) to protect his privacy, had escaped and sought help from condominium staff, reporting that he was being physically assaulted and unlawfully detained.
Authorities detained two Chinese men and one Thai woman at the scene for questioning. The incident stems from an alleged scam in which the victim was lured into opening bank accounts for criminal purposes.
According to the victim’s statement to police and reporters, he was seeking additional income when he encountered an online advertisement offering 1,500 baht per account to open digital wallets for legitimate online transactions. Upon meeting the recruiters, a Chinese man accompanied by a Thai woman, he said he was coerced into providing access to two additional bank accounts, along with his national ID card and mobile phone containing banking apps.Fearing for his family’s safety, as the suspects knew his residence, the victim complied.
However, he later noticed suspicious large transfers into the accounts beyond the agreed wallet setup. Suspecting fraud, he promptly contacted his banks to freeze the two accounts, preventing the suspects from withdrawing funds.
Enraged, the group allegedly hunted for him over two days. On the evening of January 3rd, they contacted him, promising to return his phone and ID if he met to “resolve” the issue by unfreezing the accounts. The victim agreed, hoping to end the ordeal, but claimed the suspects threatened harm to his family if he refused to continue to provide access to the accounts.
Upon arrival, he was reportedly locked in a chokehold, dragged into the condominium, and taken to a room. Fortunately, condominium staff noticed the disturbance. The victim managed to break free, run to the lobby, and urge staff to call police.
Officers arrived swiftly, rescuing the victim safely and apprehending the three suspects. Police have not released further details on the suspect individuals or charges, stating that the investigation is ongoing. Any updates will be announced in due course.
