Thailand and Cambodia Edge Toward Border Ceasefire Deal

Bangkok, December 26th, 2025– Thailand’s National Security Council (NSC) has approved sending Defence Minister General Nattapol Nakpanich (also known as “Big Lek”) as its representative to sign a Joint Statement with Cambodia on December 27th,, following progress in bilateral talks.

The key outcome from the Thai-Cambodian General Border Committee (GBC) negotiations includes an immediate 72-hour ceasefire, proposed by Thailand as a test of sincerity, in exchange for the mutual release of prisoners of war from both sides.

Thai media reports describe the move as a potential breakthrough amid ongoing border clashes that reignited in early December, displacing hundreds of thousands and causing dozens of casualties. The GBC talks in Chanthaburi province concluded Thursday with a revised draft agreement, which will need to be confirmed with Cambodia, barring any unseen difficulties or issues, tomorrow, Saturday, December 27th.

The conflict, rooted in longstanding territorial disputes, has seen intermittent artillery and airstrikes despite earlier truces brokered internationally. Sources indicate the 72-hour truce could pave the way for longer-term de-escalation if verified by outside observers.
