Thailand’s 2nd Army Region, which oversees the country’s northeastern frontier, announced on December 12th that several firefights erupted along the border with Cambodia throughout the day. The military’s evening situation report, released at 6:00 p.m., confirmed that exchanges of fire began around 9:00 a.m. across multiple districts in Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, and Surin provinces.
According to the statement, Cambodian troops initiated attacks using a combination of small arms, mortars, artillery, multiple-rocket launchers (BM-21 Grad), tanks, recoilless rifles, and drones. Thai forces responded with counter-battery fire, drone operations, and tactical maneuvers while maintaining or advancing on key positions.
The main hotspots included:
– **Chong Bok and Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani province** – Cambodian artillery and mortar barrages met with Thai return fire.
– **Chong An Ma, Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani** – Heavy bombardment involving mortars, artillery, BM-21 rockets, and combat drones; Thai troops deployed their own UAVs and delivered supporting fire.
– **Phra Viharn–Huai Ta Ma Ria area, Kantharalak district, Si Sa Ket province** – Incoming mortar, artillery, and BM-21 rocket fire; Thai units executed pre-planned counter-maneuvers and fired in support.
– **Phu Ma Khuea, Kantharalak district, Si Sa Ket** – Combined mortar, artillery, rocket, and drone attacks; Thai forces secured the sector and responded proportionately.
– **Chong Chom, Chong Rayi, and Plod Tang border passes, Kap Choeng district, Surin province** – Small-arms and mortar exchanges; Thai troops held defensive lines.
– **Chong Khana, Kap Choeng district, Surin** – Mortar, artillery, and BM-21 fire; Thai units captured strategic points and are continuing operations.
– **Prasat Ta Kwai and Hill 350, Kap Choeng district, Surin** – Cambodian forces employed recoilless rifles, mortars, artillery, BM-21 rockets, tanks, and drones; Thai troops are conducting ongoing planned operations.
– **Prasat Ta Muen area, Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin** – Recoilless rifles, mortars, artillery, and BM-21 rockets used in the assault; Thai forces retained control of their established positions.
As of the latest update, Thai military spokesmen stated that troops remain on high alert, are reinforcing positions, and are responding only as necessary to protect national territory.
