Reader Mailbag: Pattaya Residents Plea for Help with Overwhelming Landfill Odor

From a concerned resident in Nongprue subdistrict, Banglamung, their statements and opinions are their own:

For months now, the unbearable stench from a private landfill near Thung Klom–Tal Man Road 25 has been making daily life miserable for many of us local residents. On bad days, the foul smell drifts almost as far as Chak Nok Lake (Mapprachan Reservoir), blanketing entire neighborhoods in between.

Homes, villages, and housing estates along the whole corridor from the landfill toward the lake are affected the same way. What makes it especially frustrating is that several popular tourist attractions sit just minutes away—yet visitors and residents alike are greeted by this choking odor instead of fresh air.

The problem explodes whenever the wind shifts and blows from the land toward the sea instead of the usual sea breeze. Right now, during this season, that reversal happens far too often, turning parts of east Pattaya into a no-go zone after dark.

We understand the facility is privately operated, but the impact on public health and quality of life is undeniable. Many of us are hopeful that local and provincial authorities can step in with stricter enforcement, better waste-management practices, or other measures to force the operator to finally control the smell.

Something has to be done soon—before the full high season arrives and both residents and tourists suffer even more.
