Thailand’s Cabinet has greenlit a budget allocation of approximately 3.998 billion baht to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports for hosting the MotoGP World Championships from 2027 to 2031, solidifying the country’s role as a key player in global motorsports.
Aiyarin Phanrith, deputy spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, announced the decision following today’s Cabinet meeting at Government House. The funding, precisely 3,997.86 million baht, will cover operational costs, including licensing fees, taxes, and event management at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram province. This extends Thailand’s successful tenure as host since 2018, where the event has generated over 24.927 billion baht in economic value through tourism, hospitality, and local businesses.

Phanrith spoke to MotoGP’s massive global appeal, describing it as one of the world’s premier motorsports that draws an estimated 800 million viewers across 207 countries annually. In Thailand, past events have attracted an average of 206,240 spectators per race, with projections for over 1 million attendees across the five-year period. The renewal shows the event’s boost to national branding and sports infrastructure, particularly in the Northeast, where it has spurred infrastructure development and job creation.

The Ministry said that there will be efficient budget management to ensure transparency and maximum economic returns, with expected revenues of around 700 million baht offsetting some costs. This move aligns with broader efforts to revive tourism post-pandemic, positioning Buriram’s circuit—a facility built with private investment from the Chang Beer conglomerate—as a big part of Thailand’s sports tourism strategy.
