Architect Behind Khao Kheow Open Zoo’s Iconic ‘Giant Bird Cage’ Aviary Shares Heartwarming Memories While Paying Tribute to Her Royal Majesty Queen Mother Sirikit
Chonburi, Thailand – October 30th, 2025
The architect who designed and built the famous “Giant Bird Cage, a popular walk through aviary at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, has come forward with touching recollections of serving Her Royal Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother, as the nation mourns her passing.

Mr. Chai na Kwangkaeo, 78, former deputy director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo and chief civil engineering architect, spoke emotionally about his unforgettable 42-year journey, culminating in the honor of presenting the landmark aviary to Her Royal Majesty during its grand opening.

From Remote Wilderness to a Monument of Compassion
In the early 1980s, constructing the massive bird cage aviary was an immense challenge. The zoo, then located in a rugged and inaccessible area, lacked proper roads. Materials had to be transported by oxcart over difficult terrain.
“We hauled everything up by cart until it was complete,” Mr. Chai na recalled. “But with the dedication of every staff member, we were determined to create something striking and worthy of pride.”
That effort paid off on July 29th, 1983, when Her Royal Majesty Queen Sirikit (as she was titled then) graciously presided over the official opening ceremony herself – a moment of profound joy and gratitude for the entire zoo team.

“I was overwhelmed with emotion and immense pride to serve Her Majesty,” Mr. Chai na said. “From that day forward, the Giant Bird Cage became a symbol of her boundless compassion and a lasting testament to her royal vision.”
A Lasting Legacy of Conservation and Joy
Today, Khao Kheow Open Zoo has flourished into one of Thailand’s premier conservation-focused attractions, drawing thousands of local and international visitors annually. Its success, Mr. Chai na told The Pattaya News, stems from the perseverance of the original team – ensuring Her Majesty’s initiative continues to “blossom” and bring happiness to generations.

As he joined the nation in mourning, Mr. Chai na offered his deepest condolences, cherishing the privilege of contributing to a project that remains an enduring emblem of royal benevolence.
