Bangkok – In a surprise move that has sent ripples through Thailand’s political landscape, Chalermchai Sri-on, the leader of the Democrat Party, has resigned from his position, citing ongoing health issues, according to multiple news reports. The announcement comes at a challenging time for the party, which has struggled to maintain its influence since aligning with the prior ruling coalition.
Deputy Leader Pramuan Pongthawaradej has been appointed as acting party leader to ensure continuity until a successor is selected through an internal election process. Chalermchai’s resignation takes effect immediately, leaving the party’s future direction in flux as it navigates recent governmental shifts.
Chalermchai assumed the helm of the Democrat Party in December 2023, securing 88.5% of the votes in a leadership contest that followed the party’s disappointing performance in the May 2023 general election, where it won only 25 seats. His tenure began just before the Democrats decided to join the Pheu Thai-led coalition government, a controversial move that broke from the party’s historical opposition stance and led to internal divisions.
During his leadership, Chalermchai served as Minister of Natural Resources and Environment until the ouster of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra earlier this month. The party’s coalition participation has been marred by the departure of several high-profile members, including former leader Abhisit Vejjajiva and others, rising factional tensions and raising questions about the Democrats’ ideological cohesion.
Analysts suggest that Chalermchai’s exit could prompt a broader reevaluation within the party, especially as it abstained from the recent prime ministerial vote that Bhumjaithai’s Anutin Charnvirakul won on September 5th. With Thailand’s political scene in flux, the Democrats now face the task of rallying support and selecting a new leader to restore stability.
