Former Thai PM Thaksin Shinawatra Travels to Singapore for Medical Check-Up, Vows to Return for Court Ruling

Bangkok, September 4th, 2025 – Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra traveled to Singapore on Thursday, September 4th, for an alleged medical examination, amid ongoing legal scrutiny over his extended hospital stay in Thailand during a previous prison sentence. The 76-year-old tycoon-turned-politician has dismissed speculation that he intends to flee the country, pledging to return within two days to attend a court hearing on September 9th.

Update: Thaksin’s plane has not gone to Singapore as his team stated but as of 11:30 PM is East of India, possibly heading to Dubai.

Thaksin, who served as Thailand’s prime minister from 2001 to 2006, has been at the center of legal and political controversies since his ouster in a military coup. After years in self-imposed exile to avoid a prison sentence on charges of corruption and abuse of power, he returned to Thailand in August 2023. Upon his return, Thaksin was sentenced to eight years in prison but was granted a royal pardon that reduced his sentence to one year. He never actually spent a single full day in a prison cell, spending all of his sentenced time in a hospital suite, citing health concerns, which has fueled public debate and allegations of preferential treatment. Thaksin insists he was seriously ill, which has led to the upcoming court case.

The upcoming court ruling on September 9th will determine whether Thaksin’s extended hospital stay complied with legal conditions for his detention. Critics have accused him of exploiting medical grounds to avoid serving time in prison, a claim he and his legal team have consistently denied.

In a statement issued before his departure, Thaksin stated that his trip to Singapore was for a routine medical check-up and reaffirmed his commitment to facing the judicial process. “I will be back in Thailand within two days to attend the hearing,” he said, addressing rumors of a potential escape. “I have no intention of running away.”

Thaksin’s trip comes at a time of heightened political tension in Thailand, with a critical vote for the vacant Prime Minister slot set for tomorrow morning, in which Thaksin’s party, Pheu Thai, is expected to lose to Bhumjaithai’s Anutin Charnvirakul as we covered here.

Authorities have not commented on the specifics of Thaksin’s travel arrangements, but the Department of Corrections has previously stated that his hospital stay was under strict supervision. The September 9th ruling is expected to shed light on if Thaksin could possibly face stricter enforcement of his sentence.

Thaksin’s legal saga and political influence remain polarizing in Thailand, where his populist policies won him widespread support among rural voters but also sparked fierce opposition from the country’s elite and military establishment. As the court date approaches, all eyes will be on whether the former leader upholds his promise to return and face the ruling.

TPN Media notes that Thaksin is legally allowed to travel internationally after he was acquitted of a separate Lese Majeste case that had led to his passport being held until the case was resolved. The upcoming case regarding the legality of the hospital stay does not have a hold on his ability for international travel as a condition.
