Maya Bay in Krabi to Temporarily Close for Annual Marine Recovery Effort

Krabi –

In a move aimed at preserving the delicate marine ecosystem of one of the world’s most iconic beaches, Thailand’s Department of National Parks has announced the seasonal closure of Maya Bay and Loh Sama Bay in the Phi Phi Islands area from August 1st to September 30, 2025.

The Department of National Parks told the Phuket Express that the annual conservation program, is designed to allow coral reefs, shorelines, and underwater habitats to recover from the pressures of tourism.

These two months provide a breathing space for nature, especially at Maya Bay—a global hotspot made famous by the film The Beach—which sees thousands of visitors daily during the high season.

Park authorities at the Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park will be implementing several ecological recovery actions, including:

  • Monitoring the health of marine resources
  • Restoring coral reef areas
  • Installing mooring buoys to minimize anchor damage
  • Improving wave barriers to combat beach erosion
  • Running awareness campaigns for tourists and local businesses on sustainable tourism

Despite the temporary closure of these two bays, visitors can still enjoy other scenic and snorkeling-friendly spots around the park such as Phi Phi Don Island, Ton Sai Bay, Monkey Beach, and various certified dive sites. All activities remain subject to park regulations to ensure minimal impact on the environment.

Officials added that the seasonal closure has become a vital part of ongoing efforts to balance tourism with environmental protection. With the support of the community and responsible travelers, this approach aims to maintain the ecological beauty of Maya Bay not just for today, but for generations to come.
