Thai Prime Minister Calls for Unity, Peaceful Resolution in Border Talks

PRESS RELEASE:

The Thai government has made clear its peaceful approach to resolving the current border situation with Cambodia, with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra calling on all ministries to act with unity and coordination. During a Cabinet meeting on June 4, the Prime Minister directed key agencies to collaborate in de-escalating tensions in Nam Yuen district, Ubon Ratchathani province, where Thai and Cambodian forces had recently encountered a brief standoff.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been assigned as the lead agency to provide regular public updates, working closely with the Ministry of Defense and the Royal Thai Army. The government stressed that all actions will remain in line with international law and the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding signed with Cambodia, as diplomatic dialogue continues through established frameworks, including the Joint Boundary Committee (JBC). The next JBC meeting is scheduled for June 14, with Cambodia set to host.

Efforts are also being made to counter the spread of false or provocative content online during this sensitive period. The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, along with national security agencies, has been tasked with monitoring misinformation and ensuring that public discourse remains constructive. Media outlets and online platforms have been urged to refrain from publishing content that could inflame sentiment or undermine the ongoing resolution process.

The Prime Minister expressed support for the armed forces, commending their role in safeguarding national sovereignty while urging them to continue exercising restraint. She reaffirmed her confidence in both Thai and Cambodian authorities to manage the issue through peaceful channels, mutual respect, and a shared interest in long-term stability along the border.
