Sriracha, Thailand – Somdet Phra Boromma Ratchathewi Hospital in Sriracha held a special event to mark World No Tobacco Day, joining the global movement to combat smoking and its harmful effects. The event took place at the Sri Sawarinthira Nusorn 150 Years Building on the hospital’s second floor, with Associate Professor Dr. Sophon Naphathorn, Assistant Secretary-General of the Thai Red Cross Society and Director of the hospital, presiding over the opening ceremony.
Observed annually on May 31st, World No Tobacco Day aims to raise awareness of the dangers of smoking and passive smoke exposure, as emphasized by the World Health Organization (WHO). This year, the campaign focused on the theme “World Spidemic”, highlighting the widespread dangers of tobacco as a global epidemic.
To promote smoking cessation and community awareness, the hospital organized a variety of activities, including interactive exhibits, public seminars, and educational booths offering guidance on quitting tobacco. Participants learned about the impact of smoking on dental health, traditional herbal remedies that support quitting, and nutrition tips for healthier living. Medical professionals also provided consultations on smoking-related health risks, emphasizing the importance of avoiding tobacco while on medication.
This year’s campaign slogan, Expose the Tobacco Industry: E-cigarettes and Nicotine Addiction Lead to Poverty and Death”, shows the alleged dangers posed by both traditional and electronic cigarettes. The hospital’s initiative encouraged individuals and policymakers to take action against smoking and support smoke-free environments.
The hospital’s commitment to public health aligns with global efforts to combat tobacco addiction, reinforcing the importance of education and community participation in achieving a smoke-free future.
