Chonburi, Thailand – 9 May 2025: Khao Kheow Open Zoo has launched a creative initiative to help its animals stay cool during the scorching summer heat, offering specially designed frozen fruit treats as part of its “Animal Enrichment” programme. The activities aim to stimulate natural behaviours, reduce stress, and bring joy to the zoo’s diverse wildlife, according to zoo director Narongwit Chodchoi.
The zoo has tailored frozen treats for various species. Spotted hyenas were given chilled blood and pork ice blocks, while gibbons and siamangs enjoyed refreshing frozen fruits. Sun bears and Asiatic black bears savoured mixed fruits drizzled with honey, and orangutans and chimpanzees delighted in foraging for nutrient-rich frozen fruit mixes.
This year, the zoo introduced an eco-friendly twist with its “Green Ice Treats” initiative, serving the frozen goodies in bamboo containers to reduce plastic use and promote biodegradable materials. The natural containers also added an extra layer of fun, encouraging animals to lick and explore their treats.
Beyond frozen treats, the zoo has implemented other enrichment activities, such as hiding food around enclosures to stimulate animals’ sense of smell and foraging instincts, using natural-material toys, and designing habitats that mimic their natural environments.
“These activities not only help the animals cope with the intense heat but also encourage natural behaviours, which are vital for their physical and mental well-being,” Narongwit said. He explained the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare, ensuring the animals thrive under international welfare standards.
Khao Kheow Open Zoo continues to innovate and enhance its enrichment programmes, dedicated to providing the best care for its animals while promoting sustainable practices.
