Pattaya —
Three staff members were detained at a Pattaya herbal store accused of allegedly scamming tourists with overpriced products and threatening those who refused to buy.
At 4:20 PM on April 10th, Pattaya Police conducted an inspection at a herbal shop located in Pattaya. The operation followed multiple complaints from tourists who claimed they had been deceived into buying herbal products sold at inflated prices, and were threatened with violence if they refused to purchase.
This is far from the first time similar “miracle herb” shops have been in the news, as we reported here as one example when a British tourist filed a police report against one such shop. The Pattaya News has been covering this story now for over a year.
During the inspection, officers found a Thai manager and two foreign staff members inside. The Thai manager was identified as Ms. Kanlaya, 29 years old. The other two were sales staff, including Mr. Saddam, a 21-year-old Pakistani national, and Ms. Pa, a 31-year-old Myanmar national. All three were taken into custody.
Pattaya Police revealed that the store was found to be selling herbal products without proper legal authorization. They faced the following charges:
-
Selling herbal products without a license, in violation of Section 17 of the Herbal Product Act.
-
Selling unregistered herbal products, in violation of Section 58(4) of the same Act.
-
Foreign nationals working without a valid work permit or performing work beyond their legal rights.
-
Employing foreign nationals without a valid work permit.
