World, April 9th, 2025 — International Media reported that U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 90-day pause of new tariffs for countries to open negotiations and that refrain from retaliatory measures, citing the global economic strain caused by the trade war.
At the same time, Trump revealed a sharp escalation against China, declaring an increase in tariffs on Chinese imports to 125% to pressure Beijing back to the negotiating table, who has unlike most other countries allegedly refused to talk and continued to raise retaliatory tarrifs and other penalties, like threatening to ban US films and individually targeting some US companies by adding them to lists of strict export control and flagging them as so-called unreliable entities.
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately,” he wrote.
However, it remains unclear which countries will be covered under this temporary suspension but does appear to be essentially everywhere except China.
Trump justified the China tariff hike by accusing Beijing of showing “A lack of respect for the global market,” asserting the move would take effect immediately. “At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable.” Trump stated.
Following the announcement, U.S. markets surged. The Dow Jones jumped over 2,300 points (6.2%), the S&P 500 rose 7%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq soared 8.5%. Tech giants like Apple (AAPL), Nvidia (NVDA), and Tesla (TSLA) all gained over 6%, suggesting a wave of bargain-buying by investors.
China, meanwhile, has continually stated they will not bow to being bullied or threatened and promised further repercussions for the US in the near future, having already raised tariffs to 84 percent in the past day against the US.
