Ugandan Man Caught Smuggling 16.5 Kilograms of Cocaine Worth 30 Million Baht in Hat Yai

Songkhla, March 24th, 2025 — Songkhla immigration authorities arrested a 29-year-old Ugandan man named Kasim for allegedly smuggling 16.5 kilograms of cocaine worth approximately 30 million baht from Malaysia.

The arrest followed a tip-off and surveillance of the suspect, who was staying at a hotel in Hat Yai. Officers noticed his suspicious behavior as he left the hotel with a large suitcase.
Upon inspection, they found he lacked an entry stamp in his passport and took him to the Songkhla Immigration Office for further questioning.

During a detailed search, officers discovered cocaine hidden in 41 plastic-wrapped packages concealed in backpacks, shoulder bags, shirts, picture frames, and car parts. The suspect reportedly confessed he had been recruited by an unknown “friend” to transport the drugs from Malaysia to Bangkok for a $1,000 USD fee.

He traveled from Kelantan, Malaysia, entered Thailand through Narathiwat, and planned to take a bus to Bangkok before his arrest.

The suspect faces charges for importing a Category 2 drug (cocaine) without permission and illegally entering the country. The seized cocaine and related evidence have been confiscated for further investigation. Police are investigating who he was supposed to deliver the drugs to as well.
