Myanmar Border Guard Reports Major Success in Cracking Down on Call Center Gangs in Myanmar

Myanmar, March 12th, 2025 — The Border Guard Force (BGF) held a press conference in Myawaddy, Karen State, Myanmar, to report progress after one month of operations against call center gangs and human trafficking within Chinese-funded projects in BGF-controlled areas.

Lt. Col. Nai Mong So, head of the Human Trafficking Victim Assistance Center, stated that over 2,700 victims have been repatriated, while around 7,000 remain. The BGF is covering food costs at 400 baht per person per day and plans to continue monthly operations until the problem is resolved.

Repatriation delays stem from the lack of coordination from victims’ home countries. The BGF is prepared to repatriate victims immediately once agreements are made. The BGF has also ordered Chinese businesses in its territory to cease all call center activities, warning of penalties for non-compliance.

During the briefing, the BGF denied that Col. Maung Chit Thu, Secretary-General of the BGF Advisory Committee, had any involvement in call center activities or human trafficking, stating that he only leased land to Chinese investors.

The BGF reported that call center activities have decreased by 90%, and movement restrictions have been imposed on Chinese nationals involved. Six suspects are currently under BGF custody, awaiting transfer to Chinese authorities.
