Thailand, February 17th, 2025 – Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong Phiwphan, Commissioner of the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), revealed that 260 foreign nationals who worked for a call center gang in Myawaddy, Myanmar, have returned to Thailand and are being screened under the National Referral Mechanism (NRM).
Fifty cyber police officers have been deployed to collect data from the workers’ mobile phones and electronic devices. After thorough inspections, authorities found that most were trafficked victims, contradicting earlier reports that only one person had been deceived, with only 2-3 people voluntarily working for the gang.
The CCIB apologized for the initial error.
Collected evidence includes 107 IMEI numbers and data from 35 mobile phones, which will be analyzed to identify fraud patterns and determine additional charges against the call center gang and accomplices.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Trairong affirmed that legal action will be taken against the gang as a transnational crime organization, regardless of nationality or whether victims were Thai.
Immigration and Tak provincial police are handling the NRM screening, while cyber police focus on gathering intelligence. Victims will be exempt from some charges under immigration law, but voluntary workers will face legal consequences.
