Myanmar Border Guard Groups Rescue 2,000 Trafficking Victims, Half Are Chinese Nationals

Thailand, February 16th, 2025 – Liu Zhongyi, China’s Assistant Minister of Public Security, arrived at the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge 2 in Tak to oversee the transfer of trafficking victims from Myawaddy, Myanmar, into Thailand’s National Referral Mechanism (NRM).

Pol. Col. Phloen Klinphayom, the acting chief of Tak Immigration, led the inspection of the reception site, which can accommodate 200-300 people, up to a maximum of 500 daily. Many victims, including Chinese nationals, were linked to call center scam operations.

Myanmar’s BGF, or Border Guard, forces recently rescued around 2,000 people from Shwe Kokko, half of whom are Chinese. Previously, Myanmar authorities handed over 260 foreign nationals, believed to be victims of human trafficking and online scam operations in Myawaddy, to Thai officials at Tak’s Phop Phra district.

Liu confirmed that China will repatriate its citizens via chartered flights from Mae Sot Airport, similar to operations in 2024. Myanmar officials briefed the Chinese delegation on transfer procedures, including mandatory checks by Myanmar authorities, before Liu inspected the site and returned to Thailand.
