Myanmar Military Raids Online Gambling Hubs, Arrests 81 Suspects

Myanmar, February 10th, 2025 – Sources in Myanmar confirmed to the Thai Media that Myanmar’s military launched raids on multiple illegal online gambling operations in Mong Ha, Mong Yai Township, Lashio, northern Shan State, between February 5th and 7th.

The crackdown led to the arrest of over 80 suspects, including Chinese, Vietnamese, and Myanmar nationals.

The military advanced from Mong Yai and Mong Kaung, launching artillery strikes before storming Mong Ha, a major hub for online criminal networks. A brief clash reportedly occurred with armed security forces protecting the operations before the military seized control.

Among the 81 people arrested were 27 Chinese nationals, 18 Vietnamese women, and 34 Myanmar nationals. Authorities confiscated 260 mobile phones, 120 computers, 7 Starlink Wi-Fi sets, power generators, and three vehicles. The Chinese and Vietnamese suspects may face deportation, according to the sources.

Despite the crackdown, many call center fraud bases remain operational, especially in ethnic group-controlled areas that are rebelling against the Myanmar military Junta. Criminal groups frequently relocate, using makeshift wooden and zinc structures to evade detection.

The region remains difficult to control due to the presence of ethnic armed groups like the UWSA, SSPP/SSA, MNDAA, and BGF, allowing the illegal gambling industry to persist.
