Ubon Ratchathani —
At 4:20 PM on January 31st, 2025, a fire broke out at Somdej Phra Yupparat Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani after a man armed with a Molotov cocktail and a firearm entered Building 3.
According to the police, witnesses saw him walk up to the third floor, ignite the firebomb, and hurl it inside before fleeing. Thick black smoke spread quickly, causing panic among patients, doctors, and nurses.
Emergency responders rushed to evacuate everyone, ensuring all patients got out safely. Firefighters battled the flames for about an hour before bringing the situation under control.
Authorities later identified the suspect as 40-year-old Piboon (last name withheld). After setting the fire, he drove to Na Yia District, where he allegedly attempted to run over multiple people before being arrested.
Police stated that his actions were unrelated to the hospital, as he had no known grievances with the facility. Instead, he was allegedly under severe psychological distress stemming from a land fraud case six years ago that left him financially ruined.
The attack resulted in four medical personnel sustaining minor injuries, while some medical equipment was damaged. No fatalities were reported. Police have detained the suspect at Det Udom Police Station, where he faces multiple charges, including arson and attempted assault.
