A speeding SUV driven by a British-Thai national crashed into a motorcycle in Pattaya, killing one rider and severely injuring another.
At 11:06 PM on January 28th, Nongprue police received a report of a head-on collision between a car and a motorcycle on Noen Plub Wan Road near Soi Mab Yai Lia in Pattaya. Upon receiving the report, police and rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation rushed to the scene.
At the scene, officers found a bronze Toyota Fortuner, later identified as being driven by British-Thai 19-year-old Mr. Lewis. The front of the vehicle was severely damaged after colliding head-on with a red Yamaha Grand Filano motorcycle. The motorcycle was completely wrecked and dragged over 100 meters. The motorcyclist, 19-year-old Ms. Kulthida Boonyarit, suffered critical injuries, while the second unidentified rider sustained severe injuries, including a severed left leg.
Rescue workers provided first aid before urgently transporting them to the hospital. However, one of the injured victims later succumbed to their injuries.
According to witnesses, the Fortuner, driven by Mr. Lewis, was reportedly seen speeding and honking continuously along the road. As it reached the accident site, it crashed into the motorcycles with a loud impact and dragged both the riders and the vehicle for several meters. Bystanders immediately reported the incident to the authorities.
CCTV footage captured parts of the incident, showing the Fortuner overtaking other vehicles at high speed before the crash. Another camera clearly recorded the moment of impact, where the car struck the motorcycles head-on.
Mr. Lewis was detained for an alcohol test, which returned negative. However, authorities will further review CCTV footage from the scene to proceed with legal action. Mr. Lewis did not give his statement to the press.
