Israeli Tourist Arrested for Attempting to Exchange Counterfeit US $50 Bills in Pattaya

Pattaya —

An Israeli tourist was arrested in Pattaya for allegedly attempting to exchange 24 counterfeit $50 bills, worth approximately 40,000 Thai baht, at a local currency exchange shop.

At 3:30 PM on January 29th, Tourist Police received a report from T.T. Exchange, a currency exchange shop located on Soi Buakhao, about an Israeli tourist allegedly attempting to exchange 24 counterfeit $50 bills. Authorities quickly responded to the scene.

Upon inspection, police arrested 56-year-old Israeli national Mr. Rami. The man reportedly admitted to trying to exchange the counterfeit money with real money. He was taken to Tourist Police Station 4, where Ms. Nawaporn, a T.T. Exchange employee, confirmed that the bills were fake.

Ms. Nawaporn explained that the counterfeit bills were noticeably smoother in texture and, when tilted, the golden numbers did not change to green as genuine bills do. Mr. Rami was then charged with possessing counterfeit money with the intent to use it.

The authorities seized 24 counterfeit $50 bills (totaling around 40,488 Baht), which Mr. Rami claimed he had acquired in Israel before attempting to exchange them in Thailand. He was then transferred to Pattaya Police Station for legal proceedings.
