Recent Abduction of Chinese Tourist Sparks Tourist Decline in Pattaya

Pattaya

The abduction of a Chinese actor in Thailand has led to a sharp decline in Chinese tourists visiting Pattaya during the 2025 Chinese New Year, according to a tourism operator.

Thailand’s tourism sector is recently recovering from a terrifying incident involving Chinese actor “XingXing,” who was lured to work in Thailand but was later held captive in Myawaddy, Myanmar.

This caused numerous Chinese citizens to become concerned about the safety of traveling to Thailand. Despite Thai authorities quickly rescuing the actor and it not happening anywhere near Pattaya, but half a day’s regular travel at the Myanmar border, the incident led to a widespread negative perception of the country, causing fear and a belief that Thailand is unsafe.

According to Mr. Banjha Kullawannit, CEO of OceanSky Cruises, in previous years, Chinese tourists visiting Pattaya during the Chinese New Year would double the usual number during the tourist season. However, after the XingXing incident, Pattaya’s Chinese tourist numbers decreased by 30% compared to the 2024 Chinese New Year.

Chinese tourists visiting Pattaya can be divided into two groups, including those traveling with affordable tour packages and independent travelers, who typically have higher spending power.

Tour groups have already been decreasing during major festivals due to increased travel costs. Meanwhile, independent travelers usually visit during festivals, but this year, the numbers were disappointing.

Mr. Banjha emphasized that the main factor behind the decline in tourists is the negative news surrounding the safety of traveling in Thailand. He urged the Thai government to urgently address these concerns and work with the Chinese government to restore confidence in the safety of Thailand’s tourism industry.
