On January 28th, 2025, the Department of Rail Transport (DRT) announced record-breaking ridership on Bangkok’s rail systems following a free transit initiative from January 25th to 31st, aimed at reducing PM2.5 air pollution.
Total ridership on January 27th reached 2,098,591 trips, marking the highest daily figure since the COVID-19 pandemic and a 30.16% rise from the January 2025 weekly average of 1,612,338 trips.
Key highlights:
- Airport Rail Link: 90,310 trips (+20.35%), setting a new high since COVID-19.
- Red Line: 46,126 trips (+15.08%).
- Blue Line: 606,641 trips (+23.11%), also reaching a post-pandemic peak.
- Purple Line: 94,744 trips (+16.93%), another record.
- Green Line (BTS): 1,059,221 trips (+31.70%), the highest since the pandemic.
- Gold Line: 16,459 trips, a sharp increase of 143.37%.
- Yellow Line: 78,010 trips (+67.70%).
- Pink Line: 107,080 trips (+62.51%).
The feeder lines (Gold, Yellow, and Pink) saw the largest percentage increases, driven by their connectivity to residential areas and major transit routes. Overall, five primary lines, including the Green, Blue, and Purple, achieved their highest post-pandemic ridership.
Intercity train services, however, reported a slight decline, with 73,754 trips (-5.85%) compared to recent averages.
