Thailand’s Marriage Equality Law came into effect on January 23rd, 2025, marking a historic milestone as the country becomes the first in ASEAN and the third in Asia, after Taiwan and Nepal, to legalize same-sex marriage.
Since its publication in the Royal Gazette on September 24th, 2024, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has ensured readiness across all 878 district offices in 76 provinces and 50 districts in Bangkok for same-sex marriage registration.
To celebrate, the Foundation for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Rights and Justice, in collaboration with government and private organizations, will host “Marriage Equality Day” at Siam Paragon in Bangkok.
The event features three major activities: Marriage Equality, Marriage Identity, and Marriage Celebration, including exhibitions and activities for the LGBTQIAN+ community.
A historic 1,448 couples are expected to register nationwide, with over 500 couples in Bangkok alone. The event will include speeches from Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.
