Chonburi —
A luxury home in Huai Yai owned by a Chinese businessman was broken into by thieves, who allegedly stole over 100 million baht worth of high-end watches.
At 1:30 AM on January 16th, Huai Yai police received a report of a burglary at a house in a luxury housing estate in Huai Yai, Chonburi province. Police rushed to the scene with forensic investigators from Chonburi Forensic Division 2.
The incident scene, a two-story detached house covering around 80 square wah, is worth more than 8 million baht. Inside a second-floor room, officers found a black safe measuring 1 meter wide and 1.5 meters high.
The safe had been forcibly opened with a sledgehammer and crowbar. Around eight wooden watch boxes, each designed to hold 10 wristwatches, were scattered across the floor. Additionally, a rear window had been pried open and removed.
Forensic officers collected fingerprints and other evidence for further investigation.
Mr. Yu Chao, a 43-year-old Chinese national and caretaker of the house, told police in a state of shock that he is a friend of the homeowner, Mr. Wang Liang Chen, a 39-year-old Chinese businessman in Thailand’s tour industry. Mr. Wang had returned to China, leaving Mr. Yu to look after the house.
On January 15th, between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM, Mr. Yu and his family were out running errands. Upon returning, he was shocked to find the rear window pried open. Mr. Yu checked the second-floor bedroom, where he discovered that the homeowner’s safe had been forcibly opened. He was unaware of its exact contents but saw wristwatch boxes scattered around the room, with all the watches missing.
Mr. Somboon (surname withheld upon request), a 56-year-old business partner of Mr. Wang, informed police that he co-invested in the tour business with the homeowner. Mr. Wang is currently unable to return to Thailand due to an unspecified legal case in China.
He had left a friend to look after the house. After the burglary, Mr. Somboon contacted Mr. Wang and learned that the stolen items were mainly luxury-brand watches worth over 100 million baht.
Police are investigating.
