Thai Parliament Urges Action on Human Trafficking and Scam Networks

National —

On January 16th, 2025, the Thai House of Representatives discussed urgent measures to combat human trafficking and transnational crime networks, including call centers and online scams.

Kanvee Suebsaeng, an MP from the Fair Party, emphasized that Thailand’s role as a source, transit, and destination country in trafficking requires a broader strategy.

He highlighted the global mafia’s advanced operations exploiting regional weaknesses, urging stronger collaboration with neighboring countries, including Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.

The government’s current efforts—technology crime laws, a 1441 hotline, and regional partnerships—were criticized for being insufficient. Chutiphong Pipoppinyo, an MP from the People’s Party, noted that call center scams even targeted Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra, showcasing their reach.

MPs agreed to treat human trafficking as a national priority and forwarded the issue to the Security Affairs Committee for further study, with recommendations due in 90 days.
