Inception: The first National Children’s Day in Thailand was observed on October 3, 1955. This date was chosen following a suggestion by V.M. Gulgani, a United Nations representative for children’s welfare, aligning with celebrations in other countries. However, this date was not ideal as it fell during the rainy season and on a workday, which limited the participation and enjoyment of outdoor activities.
-
Change of Date: In 1965, the Committee for National Children’s Day proposed moving the celebration to the second Saturday of January. This change was approved by the cabinet in February of that year, thus shifting Children’s Day to a more suitable time for family and community gatherings. The new date allowed for better weather conditions and coincided with when schools were more likely to be on break, facilitating broader participation.
-
Celebrations and Purpose: The day is dedicated to acknowledging children as Thailand’s future, promoting their rights, welfare, and education. It’s a day when children are celebrated through various activities, gifts, and educational programs. The Prime Minister typically announces an annual slogan or motto for Children’s Day, which often reflects themes of education, morality, and national development.
-
Activities: On Children’s Day, numerous institutions like government offices, military bases, schools, and museums organize special events. These include guided tours at places like Government House where children can sit in the Prime Minister’s chair, free entry to zoos, and various cultural and educational activities aimed at fostering learning and enjoyment.
-
Cultural Significance: Children’s Day in Thailand is not just about fun but also about reinforcing cultural values, encouraging positive behavior, and highlighting the importance of education. It also serves as a platform for adults to show appreciation for children, emphasizing their role in the nation’s progress.
The motto for Children’s Day in Thailand for 2025 is:
