Pattaya —
A 36-year-old Lao crew member was severely burned after his body caught fire while repairing a yacht’s engine near Bali Hai Pier in Pattaya.
At 5:36 PM on January 4th, the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Center received a report of a person injured by burns near Bali Hai Pier, Pattaya. Upon receiving the report, rescue volunteers immediately went to the scene, along with reporters from The Pattaya News.
There, they found Mr. Inthara Keopha, a 36-year-old Lao national, severely burned across his body and crying out for help in pain. The rescue team provided first aid before urgently transporting him to a hospital. Nearby, a yacht was found stationary at the shore but sustained no damage.
62-year-old Mr. Pitthaya Kanaphon, also known as Captain Nu, told The Pattaya News that Mr. Inthara was a crew member responsible for maintaining the boat. He had been repairing the yacht’s trim motor.
After completing the repair, Mr. Inthara opened the engine compartment, and as the engine was started, flames suddenly erupted on him. Captain Nu, who said he has over 50 years of sailing experience, claimed he had never encountered such an incident before. Following the accident, he immediately contacted authorities for help.
Initial investigations by police suggest that fuel vapors or residue in the engine room, potentially leaking from hoses or pipes, might have ignited the flame after it was exposed to sparks from the engine startup. The victim is currently recovering from the incident.
