Cryptocurrency mogul Vitalik Buterin donated 10 million baht to build a new home for “Moo Deng” and support wildlife at Khao Kheow Open Zoo near Pattaya.

On December 26th, the “Kha Moo & The Gang” Facebook page posted a picture of Mr. Narongwit Chotchoy, the director of Khao Kheow Open Zoo, holding a sign stating that Vitalik Buterin, the influential cryptocurrency mogul and co-founder of Ethereum, made a generous donation of 10 million baht to Moo Deng and the zoo.

The page announced that this donation will support the wildlife sponsorship project at Khao Kheow Open Zoo and provide a brand new and world class home for Moo Deng and the other pygmy hippos. Some of the money will also be used to construct an education and learning center about Moo Deng and pygmy hippos for visitors, to inform and explain differences between pygmy hippos and regular hippos. For instance, many visitors still believe that pygmy hippos become large and aggressive and territorial but that is the other species. Pygmy hippos are mostly nocturnal, much smaller, and passive, being afraid of humans naturally.

Mr. Vitalik visited Moo Deng, the internationally beloved pigmy hippo at Khao Kheow Open Zoo, on November 19th, 2024. He bought a bag of Pad Krapao to Moo Deng’s caretaker.

In the post, the zoo said: “”After the previous occasion when he bought us Pad Krapao, this time, Mr. Vitalik is supporting 10 million baht for the wildlife sponsorship project to build a new home for Moo Deng. We will see the new home for Moo Deng soon!”

TPN Media notes the current holding area for Moo Deng has been occasionally criticized for its size and appearance but the zoo has promised multiple times to give it a significant upgrade. The proposed layout is below.
