On December 23rd, 2024, Pol. Maj. Gen. Phanumas Bunyalak, the acting commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, inspected operations at Chiang Mai Airport ahead of the holiday surge.
With Christmas and New Year expected to bring heavy passenger traffic, officials are streamlining immigration processes to ensure smooth travel.
Chiang Mai, a prime tourist destination, has seen a 25% increase in passenger numbers compared to 2023, with over 2.5 million travelers recorded this year. December’s top visitors include South Koreans (21,896), Chinese (21,843), and Taiwanese (8,561).
The government, under Thai PM Paetongtarn Shinawatra, emphasized tourism growth and safety. Efforts include deploying additional staff and equipment while maintaining strict checks to prevent criminal groups from exploiting the influx. Chiang Mai Airport is fully prepared to handle up to 5,000 daily arrivals during the festive period.
Previously, Thai immigration officials inspected Suvarnabhumi Airport and Phuket Airport to prepare for foreign tourists during the New Year holiday season, noted TPN.
