Thailand Ready onto the Global Stage, Hosting the 19th INWEPF Steering Meeting and Symposium Focused on Sustainable Agriculture and Carbon Neutrality

Thailand-

December 12th-14th, 2024, at Tsix5 Phenomenal Hotel, Pattaya, Chonburi Province.

Thailand reaffirms its readiness as a leader in sustainable development by hosting the 19th INWEPF (International Network for Water and Ecosystem in Paddy Fields) Symposium, organized by the Irrigation Development Institute. This gathers representatives from over 20

member countries, including researchers, experts, and policymakers from both the public and private sectors.

The conference is being held under the theme “Promoting Innovative Paddy Farming to Achieve Carbon Neutrality”, focusing on the development of innovations and technologies that help reduce environmental impacts while addressing the world’s food security needs sustainably.

The opening ceremony of the conference was welcomed by Mr. Rattanachai Sutthidechanai, the Deputy Mayor of Pattaya, and the Director of the Convention and Exhibition Promotion Office (Public Organization). He extended a warm welcome to the participants and
highlighted Pattaya’s readiness as a hub for economic, tourism, and international conferences,
emphasizing the city’s vision to become a smart and environmentally friendly city.

Dr. Watchara Suiadee, Chairman of Thai National Networks for Water and Ecosystem in Paddy Fields (INWEPF-THAI), reported on the progress of water management projects in paddy fields, resource conservation, and the development of technologies that address sustainability.

This included the exchange of knowledge and experiences among member countries.
Following this, Dr. Marco Arcieri, President of the International Commission on Irrigation
and Drainage, officially opened the meeting, stating, “Rice cultivation in many countries has advanced significantly, not only through the adoption of modern technologies but also with a deep commitment to environmental issues and sustainability. This transformation reflects a growing awareness of the importance of food production that not only meets human demand but also considers the long-term impact on ecosystems and the planet. I would like to emphasize 3 key principles that we must all uphold together.”

1. Strong and sustainable cooperation: Member countries and stakeholders must work closely together because water and agricultural challenges cannot be resolved in isolation.
2. Development of environmentally friendly technology: We must promote research and innovation in technologies that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support
adaptation to climate change.
3. Prioritization of natural resource conservation: Every project and policy should focus on efficient resource use while maintaining ecosystem balance.

Agenda for the 19th INWEPF Symposium:

December 12, 2024
The INWEPF Symposium will feature special lectures by experts, research
presentations, and an awards ceremony to honor individuals and organizations with outstanding
contributions to the development of water and agriculture.

December 13, 2024
The 19th INWEPF Steering Meeting will report on the progress made over the past year, approve the Phase 7 Action Plan, and select the host country for the next meeting.

December 14, 2024
Participants will visit Kubota Farm, a leading agricultural innovation hub in Thailand, where they will witness demonstrations of modern rice farming technologies with a focus on
sustainability.

19th INWEPF Steering Meeting and Symposium is not just a knowledge exchange but also reinforces international cooperation in sustainable agriculture and natural resource conservation. This event is expected to foster concrete collaborations and the development of strategies that address global challenges.

As the host country, Thailand demonstrates its commitment to leading sustainable
agricultural practices while building international confidence on the global stage.
