A Russian man tried to swim to Koh Larn, allegedly to test his strength, but ended up stranded in Pattaya Bay before being rescued by a Thai speedboat driver.
On December 8th, a 34-year-old speedboat driver, Mr. Pracharat, recounted his experience with local media, stating that he had rescued a Russian tourist who was floating in Pattaya Bay.
Mr. Pracharat said he was transporting a group of 20 foreign tourists to Koh Larn when he encountered the man, who was naked and drifting in the water about 6 kilometers from the shore, near the buoyed waterway between Koh Larn and the Bali Hai Pier.
Mr. Pracharat quickly stopped the boat, threw a life preserver to the stranded swimmer, and pulled him aboard. The man was extremely exhausted and covered in saltwater sores. He was given fresh water and wrapped in a towel before being taken to the Koh Larn authorities for further assistance.
Mr. Pracharat mentioned that the situation could have been much worse if the current had been stronger or if a passing boat hadn’t spotted him in time.
According to the tourist, he had been swimming since the previous evening as a challenge to test his strength. While trying to swim from Pattaya Beach to Koh Larn, he was swept away by the current and ended up stranded in the open sea. Mr. Pracharat noted that he had never encountered a similar situation before, although he had heard of similar incidents in the past.
Mr. Pracharat likely heard about another Russian man who was also rescued after failing to swim from Pratumnak to Koh Larn. However, the man was a stronger swimmer and decided to attempt the swim simply because “he felt like it.” Read our full coverage of that story here.
